Protect Children From Drowning - Part 1: Layers of Protection Around the Backyard Swimming Pool
Drowning is often a "silent death" because a victim is usually unable to splash violently or call for help, as one might expect. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the second leading cause of death for children 1-14 years old, and an extensive study performed by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found that "75 percent of the children involved in swimming pool submersion or drowning accidents were between 1 and 3 years old." In addition, the CPSC's study revealed the following statistics:
- Most of the victims were being supervised by one or both parents when the swimming pool accident occurred.
- Nearly half of the child victims were last seen in the house before the pool accident occurred. Twenty-three percent of the victims were last seen on the porch, patio, or in the yard.
- Sixty-nine percent of the children who became victims in swimming pool accidents were not expected to be in or at the pool, but were found drowned or submerged in the water.
Protecting children from drowning or becoming submerged in a backyard swimming pool requires more than just a single safety device or barrier. Providing "layers of protection" is the best strategy for keeping children safe in and around the pool area.
Pool Fence or Barrier
The first layer of protection is the barrier that surrounds the pool area; generally, this is a pool fence or wall. Fences or other barriers on the perimeter of the pool area should be at least four feet high, and the spaces between slats or holes in the barrier should be small enough to prevent a child from gaining a handhold or foothold which would allow them access to the other side of the barrier. Opportunities for a child to get over, under, or through a barrier should not exist.
Any gates in the fence or wall that surround your backyard swimming pool should have the ability to close and latch by themselves so that there is no danger of the gates standing open for any length of
time. In addition, gate latches should be placed out of the reach of children. An open gate or an easily reachable gate latch may be an invitation to a young child to explore your backyard swimming pool.
Door Alarm
Installing a door alarm may be necessary if one or more of the outside walls of your house acts as part of the barrier around the pool. Any door and/or screen that leads from the house to the pool area should be equipped with an alarm that sounds if the door is opened. Door alarms should be designed to sound within 7 seconds after a door is opened and for a duration of at least 30 seconds, and the sound of the door alarm should be loud and distinct to avoid confusing it with another alarm that may be in the house. In addition, door alarms should be equipped with a switch or keypad to allow adults to enter or leave through the door without the alarm sounding. This switch or keypad should be mounted high on the interior wall out of a child's reach.
Pool Safety Cover
The next layer of protection is a pool safety cover. Solar pool covers and winter pool covers are not safety covers. In fact, solar covers and winter covers are potentially deadly because a person of any size who steps out onto the cover while it is installed on the pool can quickly become trapped as the pool cover sinks into the water. Escape is extremely difficult without immediate assistance, and drowning can be the tragic result. When installed, a safety pool cover must be able to hold a minimum of 485 pounds per 5 square feet, according to the American Society for Testing and Materials' (ASTM) standard F1346-91.
Pool safety covers can be constructed from a mesh or solid material. Each type of pool cover is anchored to a deck with straps that pull the cover taut over the pool. The straps usually attach to stainless steel springs and are anchored to recessed brackets in a deck surface. A mesh pool cover prevents rain and snow from puddling on the top of the cover, but debris may accumulate in the pool while the cover is in use. A solid cover can keep more debris out of the pool, but it does not allow rain and snow to drain through; as a result, the pool cover can sag and present a drowning danger to small children who may wander onto the cover if not carefully supervised. Choosing a solid pool cover with drain panels or obtaining a cover pump to remove the accumulated water is recommended.
Pool Alarm
Yet another layer of protection is a pool alarm. Pool alarms come in different varieties: some are designed to detect disturbances in the water at surface level, some are designed to detect underwater disturbances, some act like motion detectors using infrared beams, and some are worn on the wrist and sound an alarm when the device is submerged. The topic of pool alarms is described in more detail in Part 2 of this article.
Conclusion
No matter how many safety precautions are taken to protect children from submersion and drowning accidents in the backyard swimming pool, close and constant supervision by a responsible adult is the most important "layer of protection" for ensuring the safety of children. Teaching children how to swim and providing them with flotation devices does not substitute for supervision, nor do these measures protect children from the dangers associated with swimming pools. Implementing most, if not all, of the protective measures described in this article is the best defense in preventing children from experiencing a "silent death" by drowning in the backyard swimming pool.

To truly master a game, you first must understand it. Poker is an old game enjoyed through the years by many stone faced individuals. We're going to take a look at the history of poker, or rather, a look at what the supposed history of the game is.
The birthplace of Poker
Poker's roots are anything but clear. One school of thought claims that it stems from a sixteenth century Persian game called "As Nas." This early version of poker consisted of twenty five cards and five suits. The game closely resembled five card stud. After it was picked up by traveling Europeans (apparently French), the name changed to 'poque.'
Another popular belief stems from talk of card games related to poker played around 12th century Egypt. India also gets dealt a hand due to its ancient card game, "Ganjifa."
There is even a theory that the Chinese developed a form of the game around 900 A.D. This theory claims that poker developed from Chinese dominoes. This would put the birth of poker almost a thousand years previous to the As Nas.
Poker enters puberty
Poker might owe it's ancestry to Europe, Persia, India or China, but it came into it's own on American shores. As many practices looked down upon by upper society, poker was developed into its modern form in the mainly French New Orleans. This was back in pre-civil war times, and the game quickly spread to neighboring towns and cities. The game was very popular with the existing populace, which was mostly made up of adventurers and speculators, still claiming and exploring America. A game of chances and risks was perfect for their mind set.
Back then, there were two camps of gamblers; the first being the gentleman player, and the second being the professional gambler. Society looked kindly on the gentleman poker player, who indulged in the game of poker moderately. This type of player was considered respectable. On the other side of the fence, you have the professional. These men played only for profit. They cared not for modesty, but rather for money. This camp is where the 'card shark' emerged from.
The professional poker players had a rather undesirable trait that led to the gradual degradation of the game in the eyes. They cared not for who they played against. Playing purely for profit, these men preyed on the wealthy as well as the poor. Anyone was a meal ticket for these vultures. But hey, from a vulture's point of view, it's just business.
Many professional poker players employed tricks and cheats to swindle 'respectable' men out of their money. They would play against a respected gentleman, a traveling merchant, the barbershop sweep boy, or even a slave. This led to the eventual homogenization of the poker world. In short, it became a sport that all manner of men were accustomed to.
During its early life, poker was played with one round of betting. As you might imagine, this wasn't very profitable for the professional, so the rules were gradually changed. Soon, there were bluffs, wild cards and draws. The draw allowed the professional an extra round in which to attempt to trick and swindle his opponent. If you wanted to look at it from a more lofty perspective, you could consider that the extra round brought with it also a new level of tact and difficulty, allowing a player to more greatly show his skill.
Exile to the Mississippi
Poker retained its notoriety and popularity well through the early 1800's. Around 1830, however, as the wild frontier culture was being replaced with the more proper 'southern' culture, it began to fall from favor. Many towns passed ordinances banning the practice of gambling, and kicked professionals out of town.
Unwelcome on land, the professional moved to the next logical place, the river boat. Now, getting your roulette wheel onto a riverboat isn't the easiest thing to do, so the more elaborate forms of gambling were abandoned by many, opening the door for poker.
It's in this time period that we find one of the earliest mentions of the game. The writer, Jonathan H. Green wrote about the "cheating game," he had played on a Mississippi riverboat. Upon realizing that he was the first to write about this nameless game, he dubbed it 'Poker.' At the time, poker was the number one 'cheating game' played on the rivers, out ranking even three card monte.
A Golden Opportunity
After her years in hiding, opportunity knocked for lady poker. This knock came in the form of the California Gold Rush. The influx of men hoping to strike it rich fit perfectly with games of chance, and sanctioned gambling houses to be built. Poker, being a slower, more tactical game, was not popular at first with the fast paced gold rushers. But after the rush wore off, and the frenzy's hold on people diminished, the public was left susceptible to slower, more methodical games.

Warning!!! Deadly Swimming Molds
Invades crops causes billions in lost revenues and millions starve to death.
Ok the title is a bit over the top but in a round about way it is true. Many swimming molds live in and swim through the thin film of water on wet plant leaves and ruin many important crops during extra wet growing seasons. These molds often have a very negative effect on agriculture and are directly responsible for the deadly Irish Potato Famine.
Some make their homes in moist frog skin and cause a deadly disease that has been decimating frog populations around the world for several decades now. While others cause a common fuzzy white growth of mold on tropical fish.
These molds in at least some stages of their complex life cycles propel themselves through water with the aid of tiny whip like structures called flagella. Flagella are those long whip like structures that are found on some cells such as sperm cells and are one celled plant like Eugenia protozoans which push themselves through water.
In his book The Fifth Kingdom Dean Kendrick noted mycologist (mold biologist) discusses three phyla (large groupings) of swimming molds.
1) PHYLUM CHYTRIDIOMYCOTA
The first group is known as chytridiomycota these are true fungi and they have a single flagellum at the rear of the cell, this flagellum propels the mold cell through the water just like the flagellum at the rear of a sperm cell propels sperm cells. Around 1998, Joyce Longcore determined that a type of chytridiomycete mold was causing the death of many frogs around the world by infecting their skin. You may not have heard of it but widespread frog deaths have been a serious concern for decades now.
2) PHYLUM HYPHOCHYTRIOMYCOTA
The 2nd group that Dean goes on to discuss is the kingdom Chromista phylum hyphochytriomycota. They have a single hairy flagellum at the front. Though similar to the above molds, these are not true molds.
3) PHYLUM OOMYCOTA
The Third group is the kingdom Chromista phylum oomycota, they seem to be split and cannot make a clear decision on if it is better to have one smooth flagellum at the rear or to have a hairy one at the front, so the oomycetes have opted for two flagella at the side, one of the two is a hairy flagellum that points to the front and the other is a smooth one that points to the rear.
Oomycetes make up the water molds that cause many common fungal infections in fish including tropical aquarium fish, as well as downy mildew that cause serious crop damage around the world every year. Most importantly oomycetes caused the Irish Potato Famine. This famine caused the death of one million Irish people and caused millions to emigrate from Ireland including the ancestors of Al McNamara of Abode Inspections, one of America?s first ASHI home inspectors. He was my mentor and introduced me to the home inspection field in 1993.
Some of the above organisms have a flagellum during its reproductive state only while a few exist as a single celled flagellated mold its entire life. Most of the above live in water, moist soil, or in the thin film of water on wet plant leaves. A few even live on the surface of single grains of flower pollen. Obviously, none of the above water molds are common in moldy homes. However, it is interesting to understand that these microscopic molds swim and cause serious negative impacts on humans, plants, and animals around the world.
